A Wonderful Tribute to a Harlem Legend

By Renee Watson, Illustrated by Christian Robinson

Random House Children’s books, 17.99, 40 pages

Florence Mills was a legendary singer and dancer from Harlem at the beginning of the 20th century. The daughter of former slaves, her singing talent was recognized early and she started performing with her sister at a young age. Her popularity grew and eventually Florence was singing at shows in Harlem, on Broadway, and in London. She also had a tremendous humanitarian spirit and generosity. Harlem’s Little Blackbird by Renee Watson chronicles her rise to fame and prestige in this children’s book. It highlights the challenges Florence had, like focusing on school and being shunned for the color of her skin. It also highlights her determination to succeed and try to make things better for herself and others around her. Christian Robinson beautifully illustrates the book, and the drawings go very well with the story content. This is a wonderful book that will teach and inspire both children and adults and may not leave either one with a dry eye.
