Black Dog & Leventhal Publishing, $75.00, 784 pages

I’ve been to the Louvre. I spent a total of two hours there and missed seeing the Mona Lisa – it was on loan. The crowds were intense and I was too overwhelmed to appreciate what was hanging in front of me. Not a problem though, because The Louvre:  All the Paintings, which is a beautiful over-size full-color book containing every painting on exhibit in the Louvre’s permanent collection, is now available. There’s a total of 3,022 works in all, including the masters such as Leonardo, Rembrandt, Goya and Delacroix. It’s organized into four main collections: The Italian School, Northern School, Spanish School, and the French School. Each painting is described with the name of the painting, the birth and death dates of the artist, the painting medium, the size of the painting, the Louvre catalog number and the room where the painting is found.

A DVD is included making it possible to take a virtual tour through the museum room by room, by artist, date, school, or genre. Art historians Anja Grebe and Vincent Pomarède talk about 400 of the most significant works elucidating their key attributes. This magnificent book is for artists, art students and any serious art book collector.
