Robert Neubecker’s children’s book, What Little Boys are Made Of, takes a classic poem and turns it into an exciting picture book to inspire the imagination. Little boys are made of “Moons and stars and rockets to Mars,” as well as a myriad of other things which seem nonsensical, until readers peek at Neubecker’s exciting illustrations. While initially reader’s see a little boy playing with space toys, the next page will show the vision of the truly imaginative boy envisioning his excursions in space. Each page shows the little boy, with his sidekick pup, traveling to Mars, combing through the jungle, swashbuckling with pirates, scoring the winning goal, protecting castles against dragons, and of course snuggling with his mom to read some exciting books.
It is easy to see how younger readers will truly enjoy the easy read with common sight words and brilliant pictures reflecting their own adventures between galaxies. The images are simple, clean and colorful, with large type and font for the copy—making it easier to read for new readers. Neubecker’s successful children’s book comes as no surprise after his children’s series WOW!
